Timeline

I've recently been wondering when to start my B-school efforts in earnest. I mean, I've been researching schools and I've taken the GMAT, but my time committment has been fairly low up until this point. I outlined a timeline, but there are definitely a few fuzzy spots.

Already completed: GMAT, preliminary school research

April
Make a list of leadership positions, achievements, strengths, weaknesses, etc. that I may want to include in essays

May
Draft my response to the standard essay questions (why MBA, why school X, why now?)

June/July
Ask recommenders for their support and give them an idea of expectations, timelines, etc. (this is perhaps just a bit early, but I want to make sure they have enough time!)

August
Essay questions should be posted on school websites - start drafting answers to the specific questions

September
Revise essays - have friends, family, coworkers review the essays
Check in w/ recommenders to make sure they're on track to meet deadlines

October
Finalize essays, fill out the aps, and submit for 1st round

(For 2nd round, move it all to the right by about 2 - 3 months)

Now, one major thing missing in this whole plan are the visits to schools. As I mentioned in a previous post, I think it's important that I do this to get a feel for the school, the students, and the surrounding areas. I have no idea when the best time to do this would be. Do I go next month (May), before this year ends? Or, do I go in September when the information I gain will be fresh in my mind for essays? The only problem with that is that I'm sure I'll be pretty stressed out w/out trying to fly all over the place to go to schools. I would probably have a lot of time to go over the summer, but, of course, then no one will be there! (Well, no students anyway). If any other MBA applicants or students out there have any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them! =)
